Video resumes dont even have page numbers - just runtimes.Some pros say the proper length of your resume dependson the length of your work history to date. A recent college graduate has less experience and needs only one page, whereas someone with 30+ years of work experience should have two pages.Id like to propose a different approach. Theodore von Krmn Theodore von Krmn Theodore von KrmnKnown as the father of supersonic flight, Theodore von Krmn (1881 1963) made major contributions to aviation and space technology, aerodynamics, and improved aircraft performance during an illustrious career.Von Krmn welches born in Budapest, Hungary, in 1881, and as early as six years of age was recognized as a mathematical prodigy. He won the prestigious Eotvos Lorand Prize for the best student in mathematics and science in the entire country upon his graduation from the Minta Gymnasium in Budapest at the age of 16. He graduated in 1902 with high honors from the Palatine Joseph Polytechnic in Budapest with a degree in mechanical engineering. After a year of mandatory military service, he received his doctorate under the tutelage of the famous aerodynamicist, Ludwig Prandtl, at the University of Gttingen in 1908 and remained as an associate professor until 1912.Von Krmns interest in aerodynamics was piqued while he visited Paris in 1908 and observed a short flight by Henry Farman in a test airplane, five years after the Wright Brothers famous flight at Kitty Hawk. In his aerodynamics research at the University of Gottingen, he observed the presence of eddies (counter-rotating currents) in the wake of a moving object, now known as the Krmn Vortex Trail. His discovery on the structure of airflow led to further studies on air turbulence that contributed to advances in the design and performance of aircraft. His research further helped establish the improved stability and functionality of swept-back wings.Theodore von Krmn is known as the father of supersonic flight.In 1913, he struck out on his own to become a professor in aeronautics and mechanics at the Technical University at Aachen, Germany, and was soon thereafter appointed the director of the Aachen Aerodynamics Institute at the age of 31. While at Aachen, he met Hugo Junkers and collaborated with him in the aerodynamic design of the Junkers J-1 transpor t airplane, which was the first cantilevered wing, all metal airplane.During World War I, he served in the military for the Austro-Hungarian Empire and became the head of research in the air force. At the Military Aircraft Factory in Fischamend Austria, he led the development of the first helicopter, tethered to the ground, that was able to maintain hovering flight. This flying machine was developed to solve problems plaguing the observation balloons then in use.He first visited the United States in the Fall of 1926 to consult with the Douglas Aircraft Company on the establishment of a new graduate school at the California Institute of Technology Aeronautical Lab. Four years later he returned as director of the school and his laboratory became the most prominent in the world of aeronautical sciences. Two Future Engineers Challenge Winners Selected Two Future Engineers Challenge Winners Selected Two Future Engineers Challenge Winners SelectedTwo students from California - eighth grader Ryan Beam and sixth grader Emily Takara - were selected earlier this month as the winners of the Future Engineers 3D Space Container Challenge, a competition that asked students between the ages of 5 and 19 to design 3D models of containers that could be used for various purposes in a microgravity environment.Now in its second year, the Future Engineers 3D Space Challenge series was created to inspire elementary, middle and high school students to become young innovators and engineers by enabling them to design 3D models that could potentially be manufactured in space. The ASME Foundation and NASA partnered series is hosted on FutureEngineers.org, a newly founded open innovation platform for K-12 student challenges. Ryan Beam, an eighth-grade student from Scotts Valley Middle School in Scotts Va lley, Calif., was the grand prize winner in the Teen Category of the Future Engineers 3D Space Container Challenge. Beams winning entry, ClipCatcher, was designed to enable astronauts to cut their nails without having the clippings disperse throughout the compartment. Photo of Ryan courtesy of Amy Beam. Beam, a 13-year old student at Scotts Valley Middle School in Scotts Valley, Calif., took top honors in the Challenges Teen Category with his entry, ClipCatch, a small rectangular device that helps solve a major problem that astronauts face when they clip their fingernails in space - namely, keeping the nail clippings from floating throughout the cabin. Using ClipCatch, an astronaut would simply insert a finger through a hole in one end of the container and place the fingernail clippers through a hole at the other end. Once cut, the nail clippings are trapped in the container. Beam will receive a trip to Los Angeles for a one-on-one tour of the Space Shuttle Endeavor with an astron aut and a VIP tour of Elon Musks SpaceX headquarters. Emily Takara, a sixth-grade student at John F. Kennedy Middle School in Cupertino, Calif., designed the Flower Tea Cage, a small, plastic sphere-shaped cage that astronauts could use to brew and drink tea in space. I really liked this C hallenge, she said. It makes you think at a whole different level. I learned sometimes you have to abandon one design and take another path. I spent a lot of time working on one design. Then I changed my idea and started working on something very different. I was reluctant about changing my design because I had invested so much time into it. Once I got started on my new creation, I began to enjoy it and was having lots of fun.Six other finalists in the competition each received a scholarship to Space Camp in Huntsville, Ala. The finalists in the Teen Category were Heather Mercieca of Monrovia, Calif., for her entry ECOntainer mini-ecosystem for ants and plants Geoffrey Thomas of Westford, Mass., for his entry Expandable Container for storage of trash or lunar materials and Rajan Vivek of Scottsdale, Ariz., for his Hydroponic Plant Box, which would enable plants to be grown in space without soil. Working for a WorkaholicWhen Youre Not OneWorking for a Workaholic- When Youre Not OneWe all have addictions. For some, its shoes, Groupon, or Reeses Pieces. For me, its all three- particularly in stressful situations. And, for most of my past bosses, it welches work- which left me broke in Tory Burch, buried under daily deals, and 10 pounds heavier.And looking back I wouldnt change a thing. Why? Because having a workaholic boss is the fastest way to advance in your career and enhance your personal life- if you can survive. But if I can, so can you. Heres how I made itKnow Your LimitsWhen youre settling into a new position, its easy to set goals for yourself- both in terms of the things you want to accomplish and the schedule youre willing to work in order to do so. But, after youve been there for a while, its just as easy to get swept up in the list of a mio priorities, the get it done yesterday mindset, and the unreasonable hours kept by your work-addicted boss.So, if youre startin g to feel overloaded, step back and take time to consider whats realistic for you. Do you find yourself working late because you want to or because you have to? Are you able and comfortable with being available to your employer at night and on weekends? Where can you give in- and whats getting in the way of you having a balanced life outside of work?You should also consider the type of work youre doing. If youre gaining theskills and experiences you need in order to be promoted or advance in your career, you might be willing to put in more hours than if youre doing menial work.It can be hard to determine the right limits here- its different for every workplace, industry, and person. Id say the occasional late night is as common as coffee in the office, but when you find yourself working until 1 AM at home too anxious to sleep because you only have a handful of hours left before you have to wake up and do it all over again, thats a ruby red flag.tischset Boundaries If you realize you ve got a serious threat to your work-life nirvana on your hands, its time to speak up. Your boss isnt a mind reader, so neither mental messages nor passive aggressive emails are going to work.No, this will require you to put on your big-girl blouse and call a meeting. This doesnt mean you need to walk in, guns blazing- this just means you need to have your facts checked and laid out. Time is valuable to workaholic-bosses, so the last thing you want to do is waste it.Before walking into this meeting, make sure youve tracked your time spent on projects (hey, no one can argue with math), especially any that dont align with your agreed-upon goals.Make sure that you convey your willingness to do the work, but that because youre spread so thin, the work is suffering.Its also important to elend only point out problems, but to have solutions ready to propose. The last thing you want is to seem like youre complaining or the opposite of a team player. For example, if the problem is that the w orkload is unevenly distributed among you and your peers, make a list of the projects youre handhabung in comparison to your co-workers, then give some suggestions on how you could divvy up some of those extra projects to lighten your load to a manageable amount. Make sure your points always go back to the work and your concern for it being done, and being done well.Go Full Speed Until COBAfter a talk like that, youre going to want to show your boss that you can get your work done- and youdont have to work at all hours of the night to accomplish the priorities put in front of you. So, when youre at work, make it count. Once you walk through that door in the morning, race to that 5 oclock finish line like its the Triple Crown and that jockey next to you is inching ahead. Just think, the carrot youre after is an evening free to do as you please- a sweet treat compared to the mounds of spreadsheets youre used to lugging home. Keep moving down your to-do list, making your progress known , and making your results count to prove that your balanced schedule doesnt mean less productivity.Stick to Your GunsAfter youve made it clear what your boundaries are- for example, no nights and weekends- its crucial that you push back when limits are being pushed again. Remember, your boss isnt tracking your time, so its up to you. She will work you as much and as hard as you allow it- maybe assuming youre a workaholic like she is, or that you dont mind the work just like she doesnt- and unfortunately, sometimes itll take projects not being done perfectly and on time in order for her to realize that youre overworked.This doesnt mean that you should purposely drop projects or mishandle them. It just means that there are only a certain amount of hours in a day that most human beings can function properly, so if mistakes are made or projects get left on the back burner because your head is spinning, dont get upset with yourself. If your boss is angry as a result, this is the perfect opportunity for you to discuss your workload (again). This isnt easy, but its definitely a growth opportunity worth working through.Learn to Toughen Up or Bow OutBy following the steps above, one of two things will happen Youll either work out a schedule that meets both yours and your bosss needs, leading to a harmonious working relationship, or youll realize that the demands of the job and the expectations of your employer arent a match with what youre looking for. Remember that any job position is a mutual decision. Dont just think about it in terms of your employers happiness with your performance- take the time to ask yourself if youre happy, too.And, after youve had a direct conversation with your boss to fix the problem, and youve done your part in making the necessary changes you discussed, and the answer is still no- then its time to move on to the next opportunity that awaits. This time, youll know exactly what youre looking for in company culture and a new manager.Working for a workaholic if youre not one isnt the end of the world. On the contrary, its the beginning of an incredible opportunity to learn your limits, find your balance, and carve your niche at your current company or find a new employer thats a better fit for your work style. Its easier said than done, of course, and at least a few tears, ripped hair, and gnawed nails are inevitable. Diversifying NASCAR Diversifying NASCAR Stock car racing in the 1920s and 1930s was a milieu of recklessness. The sport itself was an outgrowth of Prohibition, when moonshiners used tricked-out cars to outrun government agents. Stock car drivers were in pursuit of excitement, thrills, and boasting rights. While they understood how to modify the vehicles for speed, they paid little attention to safety.Stock car racing today is far removed from those early days. Cars are rigorously engineered for speed and endurance and also for safety. And the industry is no longer the exclusive domain of men. Several young women are now enjoying success as drivers and crew members in the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing.One of them is Tiffany Daniels. The 24-year-old mechanical engineer and ASME member works as a support engineer for Earnhardt Ganassi Racing, designing and testing suspension ordnungsprinzips for the car driven by Juan Pablo Montoya. Daniels is one of the few female crew engineers in NASCAR and also races professionally in the NASCAR circuit. The Davidson, N.C., resident aims eventually to compete in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, one of the largest and most popular events in motorsports.Daniels the engineer is focused on Montoyas car No. 42, a Chevrolet Impala SS that finished a respectable eighth place in the Sprint Cup Series last year. Daniels is involved in the research and development of parts used in the cars suspension system. Using advanced computer-based modeling and simulation tools, Daniels establishes the precise geometric settings and tolerances for the component assemblies, enabling the suspension system to endure the stress of high speeds and hard steering.One of the few Tiffany Daniels, a NASCAR crew engineer, is also an aspiring driver.My role is to develop a robust front-end system that can withstand the extreme conditions on the race track and, at the same time, provide optimum driver comfort and safety behind the wheel, Daniels said.NASCAR in recent years has placed a high priority on driver safety. After the death of Dale Earnhardt in the 2001 Daytona 500, NASCAR introduced its Car of Tomorrow program, which encourages drivers and engineers alike to incorporate safety innovations in race cars.The Car of Tomorrow is strongly focused on the engineering and, more specifically, research and development side of stock cars, Daniels said. For me, it will involve integrating my simulation work into NASCARs vision for an innovative and radically different type of chassis and chassis-body configuration that promotes increased driver safety.Tiffany Daniels attended the University of North Carolina, Charlotte, where she enrolled in specialized courses in the UNC motorsports curriculum. She graduated Magna Cum Laude in 2007 with a B.S. in mechanical engineering.Daniels last year entered NASCARs Drive for Diversity program, which develops minority and female drivers and crew members. She won a ride competing in the Cam ping World Series East competition. Daniels is one of 31 drivers who have competed under the Drive for Diversity banner.According to Daniels, NASCARs new diversity initiative will enable the racing association to tap into a broad universe of talent, skills, and ideas to improve professional stock car racing. Diversity fosters an infusion of fresh ideas to grow the NASCAR product, as well as build the NASCAR image beyond traditional markets, she said.Daniels and other young female drivers like Chrissy Wallace (daughter of the racer Mike Wallace) and 18-year-old Johanna Long are emerging as strong role models for gender diversity in professional racing. Their example shows that young women can pursue a broad spectrum of career interests.Daniels goal is to race in the Sprint Cup Series within three years.
